Reading Response for Indian Killer
I am doing my reading response on the book Indian Killer by Sherman Alexie. I enjoyed the book the Indian Killer. It was exciting all the way throughout the book. Sometimes it was getting so good i didn't want to put the book down. When I was looking at the book i was thinking this is going to take forever to read. on the other hand, it was a really long book but it was a fast read. I liked how the author wrote the book. How they jumped from character to character in each of the chapters. My favorite/ chapter was the first chapter whenever they were writing whatever came to their mind. Sometimes I thought this book was a little too violent at times. Sometimes i was thinking is the Indian Killer really doing this to those citizens. Also, whenever i was reading the book i could see it happening in my head. The book was a little too predigest and racist at times. It was like living back then when every body wasn't treated equal. Back in that time if another race died instead of white it didn't matter. From the start of the book i guessed/ who the Indian killer was and i had it right all along. I was disappointed because John Smith was my favorite character in the story. In the Story it mentioned that John Smith had Schizophrenia. I've seen movies and learned about Schizophrenia in phycology class. John Smith was hearing voice in his head telling him to hurt people and he couldn't tune them out. Like the movie we watched with Will Ferrell. Were the doctor thought he had Schizophrenia because he was hearing voice's in his head.I also like how they started off the book where John was born and it continued through his life. I also liked the story sometimes went back in time and then it went back to the present.I didn't like the ending to this book the reason i didn't like the ending is when John killed himself. It would have liked it better if John Smith had lived but got help with his illness. What makes a book good is after each chapter the reader is guessing what is going to happen next. This was one of the best books I have ever read.

I agree in the fact that I liked the book as well and it is a good story. Would I go as far to say it is the best book I have ever read, no, but it wasn’t really my favorite thing to read about. I agree that the book was very exciting and it always kept me interested. The author was very good at painting pictures with his words, so much so that I even had a nightmare about the book. This alone expresses that I agree that book was violent and honestly it was a bit disturbing.
ReplyDeleteI too liked the book and thought it was very interesting. Although, throughout the book I believed John was the Indian Killer, at the end I realized he was not. He did not have the knife inlaid with turquoise gems. He had cut Jack Wilsons face with that dull knife the homeless lady gave him. Even with his illness, I still dont think he was the killer. If he was, he would have killed Wilson. The killer was someone else trying to give a powerful message to the city of Seattle; John was just trying to survive and feel Indian.
ReplyDeleteI am glad this is one of the best books you have ever read. I greatly enjoyed this book, but do not think it was one of the best books I have ever read. I still think it is hard to say exactly who the Indian Killer. I think this will bring up a great discussion in class on Wednesday or whenever. I will be really interested to hear what everyone thinks about that.
ReplyDeleteThis book did have a lot of racial tensions in it. This is what got me emotionally attached to this book and the characters. I feel bad for how people are treated because of the color of their skin. I think it is bullshit to treat others poorly because of something so insignificant. I guess all we can do is educate the people who do racial things. Overall, great book!
I agree with the fact that you did not like that John Smith had to die at the end. I also believe he had schizophrenia. I think it would have made for a better ending if he was able to get help and possibly find out about where he was from. That might have helped with his issues. Finding his tribe should have been the goal of his parents from the get go. When they first saw signs of trouble they should have done everything under the sun to locate his mom and essentially his tribe. But all in all I agree it was a very good story.
