reading response

This is my response to the book, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas A Salvage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream"

I thought the book was okay. It started off slow but then it started to get exiting as it went along. I thought it was a little hard to follow sometimes. It was hard to tell if he was dreaming or if it actually was going on. It seemed this was a true story and he was telling it over again the way it happened. The language they used sometimes in the book was a little to much. My favorite part in the story was when they were on their way to Las Vegas and they picked up the hitchhiker. They could of made the story better if they got caught by the cops and they were in a high speed chase. Then they could of got taken to jail and escaped or something that would have made it more exciting. Overall it was a pretty good book to read.

  1. I have much of the same views of this book as you do. I thought the book was just okay, and not something that I would re-read. I also thought it was very hard to follow through most of the book. I think the hitchhiking part was pretty crazy. I mean the odds of running into the same hitchhiker twice, probably are not that great!

  2. I too was not a huge fan of the book. But I actually feel that I could grow to like it if I read it again. I say this because I now have a better understanding as to what is occurring because of the movie. I also feel that after our discussion in class that if I reread it I would go through and look for more symbolism throughout the story. That type of technique is my favorite but I was not able to pull that from the book on my first read due to all the confusion caused by the drug hallucinations and flashbacks Thompson incorporated.

  3. I also found the book difficult to read, but once I understood that the book was just a crazy, drug fueled ride through Vegas, I began to see the humor in the book. If you read it more as a party book of funny stories it is much more legible. If you take the book in a very literal sense it simply makes no sense. Also a very crucial detail about the story is that it was mostly based on true events. Without this info I think it would be very easy to be lost.
